Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercise

We know that juggling demanding careers and personal responsibilities can leave you feeling tense and drained. Your body and mind definitely deserve a moment of relaxation and rejuvenation!

That's why we're highlighting the scientifically-proven technique of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) - a tool that has the power to ease stress, anxiety, insomnia, and even some types of chronic pain.

PMR involves systematically tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups, helping you release built-up stress and achieve deep relaxation. A nice thing about this strategy is that you can easily do a shortened version if you don’t have a lot of time, or lengthen it when you really want to go deep.

Today we’re going to focus in on 4 key areas where stress tends to accumulate - your face, shoulders, arms, and legs.

  1. Squeeze all the muscles in your face for approximately 10 seconds. Then relax. Let your cheeks drop, your jaw loosen, and let your tongue drop down from the top of your mouth. Release all tension in your eyelids, eyebrows and forehead. Let your scalp relax.
  2. Tense your neck and shoulders for roughly 10 seconds. Then let your shoulders drop and release your neck. See if you can let your shoulders drop down even further.
  3. Now contract all the muscles in your arms and hands. Keep them squeezed for 10 seconds. Then release. Let your arms feel heavy, your hands open, fingers splayed. There’s no tension in your biceps, triceps, or forearms.
  4. Lastly squeeze all the muscles of your legs for about 10 seconds. Then let them relax. Your thighs are slack, your buttocks have no tension, your calves are loose, and your feet are broad and tension-free.

In just a minute or two you can release built-up tension, ease stress, and improve your overall well-being. You'll experience a profound sense of relaxation and rejuvenation, and be ready to tackle your day with renewed energy and focus.

Enjoy!
