A new research report was issued by Pediatrics this week. It found that marketing and branding foods with characters like Dora the Explorer drives preschool children to choose higher-calorie, less nutritious foods as well as gives them the perception that those foods taste better than ones that don’t have characters on them. The preschoolers in this study had no idea about the affect marketing on them. How could they? THEY’RE PRESCHOOLERS!
Remember when the cigarette industry had to get rid of Joe Camel because it was directed at kids? Why not enforce the same standards for foods that could be just as dangerous from a health perspective?
